There is a most popular racecourse in Ayr and excellent yachting facilities are available at the marinas in Troon, Largs, Ardrossan and Inverkip. The Clyde Muirshiel Country Park lies close at hand with scope for outdoor activities. Inland water activities at Lochwinnoch nearby include water skiing, dinghy sailing and windsurfing.

DESCRIPTION

Woodside Castle is a Grade A listed mansion which dates originally from 1551 when Hugh Ralstoun purchased the estate of Woodside of Turnerland. The Castle was originally a square tower which still forms a portion of the present mansion. The Castle stayed in the hands of the Ralstoun family until 1771 by which time it had been altered several times. Further additions and extensions were made in 1833 and the current façade was extensively remodelled in 1890. The current owners have completed a major programme of repair and refurbishment to put the House into a sound state of repair.

The House is approached by a single track drive from the public road through wooded grounds terminating in substantial gravel sweep to the front. Internally the Castle is a spacious, well proportioned and comfortable house. Its principal rooms have considerable character and style and incorporate many attractive period features including marble and stone fireplaces, ornate plasterwork and extensive wood panelling. The self contained basement flat is an excellent additional facility.

The wooded grounds provide considerable privacy with paddocks and grazing land available for equestrian or other uses. There is also extensive garaging and outbuildings suitable for a wide range of uses.

DESIGNATIONS

Woodside Castle has been listed by Historic Scotland as Category A because of its architectural and historic importance.

As a consequence of its architectural importance, the local planning authority granted planning permission for enabling development in part of the grounds. Some 5 acres of land have been purchased by Manor Kingdom for the erection of 5 substantial country houses. These will not be visible from the Castle and have their own separate access. Further details are available from the selling agents. This enabling development has enabled substantial repair and restoration works to be undertaken to Woodside Castle.
