Dunloe House

Dunloe House is a most impressive Scots Baronial mansion believed to have been commissioned in 1862 by a successful Glasgow based solicitor (Ninian Ballantyne Stewart) with further Scots Jacobean style alterations made in 1889 by the renowned Scottish architects ‘Honeyman and Keppie. The house is constructed of attractive blond sandstone under a series of pitched slate roofs together with an attractive copper octagonal ogee roof with a ball finial. The house primarily comprises a substantial three storey wing with double storey staff accommodation at the rear and substantial adjoining wings creating a most attractive central courtyard. Dunloe House was designed and constructed to an exacting standard and boasts a number of fine architectural features including crow stepped gables, oriel windows, an ornately carved stone pediment and mask grotesques. On the ground floor, the main house accommodation comprises and impressive central hallway, 3 substantial public rooms, a kitchen, billiards room, wc / cloakroom, butler’s pantry and various other useful stores. On the first floor there are 7 large bedrooms (1 en suite) and a bathroom whilst on the second floor there are 4 bedrooms, a bathroom and various ancillary rooms including a magnificent balcony providing outstanding views towards the Isle of Bute. The house has many fine features including oak panelled walls, some outstanding stained glass windows overlooking the central courtyard, magnificent carved stone open fireplaces and some exceptional plasterwork.

Outside, the house sits in enclosed grounds extending to about 1.7 acres which comprise extensive areas of lawn, mature specimen trees, a pond, and a range of useful outbuildings including the original wash houses and a useful double garage.
