General
Ard Aluinn lies in a beautiful location on the edge of Glen Tarff, with stunning views up Loch Ness and over Fort Augustus and its abbey to the forests behind. Formerly the factor's house for Culachy Estate, Ard Aluinn was sold from the estate about 20 years ago and today is a delightful family home, set on a sheltered, elevated site, positioned to take advantage of its outstanding setting. Originally a traditional two-up-two-down house, Ard Aluinn was extended about ten years ago to create a spacious home retaining much of its character and providing well-laid out accommodation. The generous grounds at Ard Aluinn surround the house and contribute greatly to the amenity of the property with their terraced lawns, sheltered sitting areas and mature trees. Behind the house the land rises gently to a fringe of native woodlands and from here there is access to Culachy Falls and the Corrieyairack Pass, a road built by General Wade through the Monadhliath Mountains to Kingussie.
The village of Fort Augustus reached prominence in the 18th century as a military settlement, however today it is popular for its proximity to Loch Ness and its traditional centre built around along the 5 locks which form part of the Caledonian Canal. The village provides a number of shops, hotels and restaurants, primary and secondary schooling , while Inverness, about an hour's drive away, has all the facilities of a modern city including its airport with regular flights to the South. With its many attractions Fort Augustus is a well-known tourist destination however, just a short distance away, the beautiful countryside remains unspoilt and tranquil, providing a haven for wildlife and excellent sporting and leisure opportunities. As well as the traditional rural sports of fishing, shooting and stalking, golf and sailing there are numerous way-marked walks and cycle trails and the Nevis Range Ski Centre near Fort William offers year round activities.
