Eilean Mhic Coinnich (Mackenzie Island) is a small uninhabited island lying off the southern end of the Rhinns of Islay peninsula on the Inner Hebridean island of Islay, off Scotland’s West Coast. Islay is known as the ‘Queen of the Hebrides’ with spectacular scenery including golden beaches (one seven miles long situated near the airport), magnificent sea views as well as lush green pastures and heather covered hills. The island is lapped on its West Coast by the Atlantic Ocean and warm Gulf Stream giving it a surprisingly mild climate with very few frosts. Islay is one of the largest islands in the inner Hebrides and is abundant with wildlife including red deer, seals, otters, and a wide range of birdlife and flora.

There are excellent local amenities available on Islay. Portnahaven offers a good range of local amenities including a shop, pub and church whilst Bowmore (about 16 miles) has further local shopping. The island offers wonderful opportunities for a wide range of recreation and leisure pursuits including sailing, fishing, hill walking, mountain biking and pony trekking. The island is particularly famous for its whisky production with eight working distilleries including the world famous Lagavoulin, Laphroaig, Bowmore and Bruichladdich distilleries. In addition there is a highly regarded golf course and many superb ‘sporting’ opportunities.

Extending to about 42 acres, Mackenzie Island (Eilean Mhic Coinnich) sits about 200m off shore from the picturesque village of Portnahaven. The island enjoys breathtaking views over the Atlantic and North Channel whilst immediately to the south lies the larger island of Orsay with its famous Rinns lighthouse. The island is of particular interest to those with ornothological interests and is home to breeding Greylag Geese and Arctic Terns. The narrow channel between Mackenzie Island and Portnahaven is frequented by grey seals and otters as well as by other bird species including various divers and shags. The island has been designated as a Site of Special scientific Interest (SSSI) and Special Protection Area (SPA). In recent years the island has been used to graze cattle with access taken from a delightful sandy bay.
